Folio 01 — What Is a Supply Chain
Supply Chain definition: a connected system of organizations, people, activities, information, and resources that procures raw materials, converts them into finished products, and delivers those products to the end customer.
It covers every operational department in an organization — Purchasing, Stores, Warehouses, Manufacturing, Order Processing, Dispatch — and extends outside the organization to vendors and customers. If an activity helps get a product or service to the customer, it’s part of the supply chain.

Folio 02 — Supply Chain Management
SCM definition: the coordination of activities across the supply chain so materials and services flow smoothly and products reach customers on time.
The Supply Chain Operational Reference (SCOR) model, developed by the Supply Chain Council, breaks SCM into five focus areas: Plan, Source, Make, Deliver, and Return.
Folio 03 — SCM Software vs. SCM ERP
These two terms get used interchangeably — they shouldn’t be.
Executes the supply chain processes above. Some organizations stitch together disparate tools — a procurement system here, a transportation management system there — based on unique requirements. The catch: disparate systems run as silos, and integrating (then maintaining) them gets complicated fast. An integrated, often industry-specific, SCM application solves the silo problem and should support forecasting, demand planning, and materials planning at minimum. What it typically can’t do on its own: integrate with Finance or HRMS.
SCM software that does integrate supply chain activities with the rest of the business — Financials and HRMS included. That gives management one integrated view of organizational performance, and because SCM-ERP surfaces the real-time financial impact of supply chain transactions, it lets you spot unprofitable transactions early instead of at month-end.

Folio 05 — Key Modules
Four core modules, plus three you’ll add as the business needs them.
Core · Procurement
Also known as Procurement. Records a requisition, routes it for approval, converts it to a purchase order, sends the approved PO to the vendor, and follows up until material is received at the distribution center.
Core · Materials
Handles receipt and storage of raw material, issuing raw material to production, receipt and storage of finished products, and completing orders against sales orders — plus physical inventory tracking.
Core · Production
Converts raw materials into finished products. Tracks and consumes resources — labor and machines — and handles quality checks on finished goods.
Core · Fulfillment
Records customer orders and processes dispatch to fulfil them. Key steps: order entry, picking, packing, dispatch — plus handling customer returns.
Optional
Records forecasted demand and plans raw-material availability and production capacity to meet it, using Materials Requirements Planning (MRP), Min-Max planning, or Reorder Point planning.
Optional
Augments Inventory with advanced storage, tracking, and material-movement processing. Sharpens receiving and picking accuracy using barcodes and RFID.
Optional
Tracks the finished product from factory gate to customer gate, protecting in-transit quality and ownership transfer, using IoT and GPS to reduce delays.
Folio 06 — Buyer’s Checklist
Business Factors
Meets industry requirements: direct shipment is a distribution-industry feature; consignment sales is a retail-industry feature. Supply chain complexity differs by industry — your ERP has to match it.
Supports company-specific needs: two companies in the same industry can run different supply chains. Since the chain is a competitive advantage, identify what’s unique to you before you buy.
Scalability: supply chain complexity grows exponentially with the business — the ERP needs to absorb that growth.
People Factors
People are technology-savvy: supply chain ERPs are complex. Users need to learn both the application and how to get support when something breaks.
Change management: supply chain ERP entails real process change. Run a thorough change-management process before and during implementation — and favor systems that demand the least change effort.
Support Factors
Quick, quality support: an uninterrupted supply chain is non-negotiable, so your ERP vendor needs to resolve issues promptly.
Other Factors
Modular: roll out Purchasing and Inventory now, phase in Manufacturing and Order Management later — a modular design keeps future rollouts plug-and-play.
Easy to use: the interface shouldn’t fight the people who use it daily.
Value for money: the application should meet critical requirements at the lowest total cost.

Folio 08 — Cloud vs. On-Premise
The customer manages both the ERP software and the hardware infrastructure. That control allows deep customization to unique supply chain processes — at the cost of running unfamiliar IT infrastructure in-house.
The vendor manages both software and hardware. The customer configures the ERP to fit their business, though customization is more limited — sometimes the business process has to adapt to the ERP instead of the reverse. The core payoff: lower cost and complexity of managing IT infrastructure.
Cloud or on-premise, the real work is the same either way: understand your critical business requirements and confirm the ERP you pick can meet them quickly.
Folio 09 — Wholesale Distribution

Procurement spans simple and complex purchase deals — one-time or repeated. Inside an SCM-ERP, it shows up as its own module, letting a company track quote requests, purchase orders, invoices, accounts payable, sales orders, and shipments in one place.
A procurement ERP tool can run as cloud or on-premise. Cloud versions live on internet-based servers the provider manages — upgrades, maintenance, and downtime included — usually the cheaper route, accessible from anywhere, though data security typically doesn’t match an on-premise setup.
