Warehouse Management covers the tools and techniques to plan, administer, execute, track, and report the activities conducted in one or more warehouses belonging to an organization. It governs the flow of material through the business.
A traditional warehouse handles material planning; material receipt and quality inspection; putaway to specified locators; moving materials to the production floor; picking and releasing to the dispatch staging area; physical inventory count and adjustments; cycle count and adjustment; and obsolescence.

Folio 02 — Challenges
Three things drive the complexity: a large number of items, a large number of transactions, and the manual effort needed to maintain warehouse discipline. Item count alone can range from a few thousand in manufacturing to hundreds of thousands for wholesale distributors, retailers, or a 3PL provider — and in distribution, getting the item definition right actually matters, unlike a 3PL where it’s often incidental.
A typical warehouse handles thousands of items in a single day — located, picked, grouped into pallets, and loaded onto trucks. At that scale, error-free manual tracking is close to impossible.
Then there’s discipline: every item or group has to be tagged to a specific location, placed there correctly on receipt, and picked from that same location to meet demand. Most businesses pick older stock first, but need the flexibility to run FIFO or LIFO depending on the product, market, and unit cost. To avoid stockouts, the system needs to generate internal warehouse requisitions on time — and every item needs ongoing monitoring for shelf life and obsolescence.

A Warehouse Management System (WMS) is software that supports the efficient performance of warehouse activities. A good WMS should be industry-specific and handle the processes typical of that industry. There are three broad types.
An independent system that doesn’t integrate with other organizational applications. Works well for MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise) companies with less process complexity — though the company has to build both inbound and outbound integrations to tie the WMS into receiving and dispatch.

Folio 05 — ERP for Warehouse Management
An ERP for Warehouse Management is an ERP with WMS built into the application. The main advantage is a single source of truth: items are defined once in the inventory management application and used directly in the WMS. Most modern Cloud ERPs also support ADC (Automated Data Capture) devices — barcode and QR code scanners — essential for day-to-day WMS users.
As ERP moves to the cloud, WMS moves with it — shifting to Cloud WMS and cutting overall infrastructure cost while adding cloud-native scalability and security. The trade-off: an integrated WMS may not fully support every unique requirement of your specific industry, and process changes can be harder to make than with a dedicated standalone system.

Six factors to weigh before signing a contract — whether you’re comparing a legacy on-premise system or a wholesale cloud ERP software platform.
Business Fit
Meets industry requirements: cross-docking, barcode, QR code, RFID tagging, reorder point planning, and Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) all show up differently by industry — make sure the ERP you pick actually covers yours.
Long-term scalability: WMS complexity grows exponentially with the business, so the system needs headroom, not just a fit for today.
Peak & seasonal load handling: the system should absorb sudden surges and let you adjust for seasonal demand without falling over.
Technical Factors
ADC integration: barcoding support at a minimum.
Data security: WMS handles sensitive data, so security is a real selection criterion, not an afterthought.
Adaptable to new technology: the vendor should offer the best technology available now and a path to adopt what matures next.
Other Factors
Modular: the organization should be able to buy WMS separately, then progressively and seamlessly integrate it with the ERP.
Easy to use: intuitive and logical enough that a non-technical user can transact in it confidently.
Value for money: meets the critical business requirements at the lowest total cost.

Other established names in the market include Manhattan WMS, Oracle WMS, Pyramid WMS, Sage WMS, SAP WMS, HighJump WMS, PKMS WMS, and Fishbowl WMS.
Free and open-source WMS options also exist for smaller operations on a limited budget — but they only work well with a competent, dedicated internal team to run them. Don’t underestimate the effort it takes to make a free or open-source WMS actually function for your business.

Advanced GIS systems are enabling intelligent, optimal pick paths. Warehouse systems integrated with voice technology — Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant — can guide a picker straight to the right stock location, and paperless picking using ADC devices is now closer to the norm than the exception.
Advanced technologies are starting to auto-recommend stock locations for putaway, improving inventory optimization. IIoT devices tied into the WMS can direct users to the stock with the lowest shelf life so it gets pushed through sales promotions first — and can flag an impending stockout before it happens.
Inventory management tracks what you have and its value; a WMS governs how it physically moves through the warehouse — receiving, putaway, picking, and shipping. The two work best integrated, sharing one item definition.
